BJP lawmaker Nishikant Dubey demanded an inquiry into the historical China ties of the Nehru-Gandhi family, targeting Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi following the revelations he says are based on declassified documents related to the 1961 Belgrade Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
In a strongly critical tweet on X on Monday, Dubey targeted the foreign policy acts of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
"Rahul Baba, did you know that on China's behest your patriarch Nehru ji made the new gimmick of non-aligned nations? See the member nations of the inaugural conference at Belgrade in 1961. Once India was kept isolated from Russia and America, did any nation come to India's rescue during or after the 1962 war with China?" Dubey asked.
The BJP MP said the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement — a diplomatic move Nehru supported — ultimately benefited Beijing's strategic interests.
Citing what he called the 26th declaration of the Belgrade Summit, Dubey alleged the wording of the resolution reflected Nehru's tilt towards China.
"Tibet to China, Panchsheel for China, and after keeping China as a permanent member of the United Nations, this conference directed the UN to accept China as the only representative state. In siding with China, did your family give the 1962 war to India or not?" he claimed.
He then raised a stinging question to Rahul Gandhi:
"Should the China-Nehru family relationship be probed?"
The Belgrade Summit, which took place in September 1961, was the first meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, a group of nations that aimed to chart their own course during the Cold War, avoiding alignment with either the Soviet Union or the Western bloc. Nehru was instrumental in defining the movement's vision and philosophy.
This is not the first time Dubey has attacked the Congress party for past policy decisions. He also blamed the Nehru-Gandhi family in the past for selling out India's interests by appeasing Pakistan via the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). He pointed to India's financial contributions to Pakistan under the treaty as proof, implying that previous decisions by the family had compromised India's strategic footing.
